What does safranin do in Gram staining?

Safranin O acts as the counterstain in the Gram staining procedure. After crystal violet is removed from Gram-negative cells during decolorization, safranin stains cells pink to red. Gram-positive cells generally retain the crystal violet–iodine complex and remain purple.
