Applications
Methylene Blue is widely used across research, laboratory, and industrial settings. Key applications include:
- Biological staining: A cationic dye that binds negatively charged cell components such as DNA and RNA, used to visualise cells under the microscope and to assess cell viability.
- Redox indicator: Turns blue when oxidised and colourless when reduced, making it useful in analytical chemistry.
- EMB agar: Used in Eosin Methylene Blue agar to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, making it selective for Gram-negative organisms such as E. coli.
- Aquaculture: Acts as an aquarium disinfectant, controls fungal growth on fish eggs, and is active against parasitic protozoa and fungal infections.
- Disinfectant: Deactivates viruses and pathogens when activated by light (photodynamic action).
- Water testing: Serves as an indirect indicator of dissolved oxygen content and helps detect biological contamination.
- Dairy industry: Used in the methylene blue reduction test to assess the microbiological quality of raw and pasteurised milk.
