Copper sulphate anhydrous is used in analytical chemistry as a moisture indicator and laboratory reagent, as well as in electroplating, mining, wood preservation and the manufacture of other copper compounds.

When water is added to anhydrous copper sulphate, it absorbs water molecules and forms copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O). Thus its color changes from white to blue.

Anhydrous copper sulphate is stable at moderate temperatures but decomposes thermally at about 600 °C forming black copper(II) oxide while releasing sulphur dioxide and oxygen gases. 

Anhydrous copper sulphate is prepared by heating copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O) to remove its water of crystallization and produce the white anhydrous form.
