Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)  is a cationic surfactant that lowers surface tension and forms micelles in aqueous solutions. It is useful in extraction, emulsification and synthesis of nanoparticles.

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide does dissolve in water and forms micelles at a concentration higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC).

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is a cationic detergent used in DNA extraction to lyse cell membranes and isolate pure DNA. It is especially effective for plant tissues because it forms insoluble complexes with polysaccharides and other sticky compounds so that the DNA remains in the aqueous phase to purify.

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide has the condensed structural formula [(C₁₆H₃₃)N(CH₃)₃]Br. The molecule consists of a quaternary ammonium cation and a bromide anion.
