Phenethyl alcohol is considered safe for skin and is classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, it is safe for use in cosmetic products at concentrations up to 1%.
Phenethyl alcohol is not a fatty alcohol it is a benzene ring attached to an ethanol molecule whereas fatty acids are a long chain of alcohol that is either branched or straight.Â
Phenethyl alcohol is not drying alcohol. It is, in fact, used in cosmetic products to retain moisture.
Phenethyl Alcohol is chemically synthesised by the various processes such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene with ethylene oxide, reduction of phenylacetic acid and hydrogenation of styrene oxide.
