Phenethyl Alcohol, also known as Benzyl carbinol, is an organic compound and it is a primary alcohol in the Aryl Alkyl Alcohols in the fragrance group. It is found in the extract of hyacinth, orange bloom, neroli, Aleppo Pine and is colorless liquid with a pleasant smell. It is commonly used in cosmetics, fragrances and foods.

Uses of Phenethyl Alcohol

  • Used as a preservative to protect formulations from contamination caused by viruses, bacteria, and fungi, and helps to improve product safety and shelf life.
  • Widely added to hair care and cosmetic products, such as perfumes, deodorants, soaps, lotions and creams to impart a pleasant floral fragrance.
  • Exhibits mild antioxidant and skin-conditioning properties, enhancing the effectiveness of skincare formulations.
  • Used as a solvent and flavouring agent in oral or topical pharmaceutical products, and also added in ointments and creams for antiseptic properties

Phenethyl alcohol is considered safe for skin and is classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). According to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, it is safe for use in cosmetic products at concentrations up to 1%.

Phenethyl alcohol is not a fatty alcohol it is a benzene ring attached to an ethanol molecule whereas fatty acids are a long chain of alcohol that is either branched or straight. 

Phenethyl alcohol is not drying alcohol. It is, in fact, used in cosmetic products to retain moisture.

Phenethyl Alcohol is chemically synthesised by the various processes such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation of benzene with ethylene oxide, reduction of phenylacetic acid and hydrogenation of styrene oxide.
