Ethyl Violet

FAQ's

Ethyl Violet is an acid–base indicator that shows a colour transition in a highly acidic range. It typically changes to purple around pH 0–1.6, with the transition centered roughly near pH ≈ 1.

Crystal Violet and Ethyl Violet are similar but not identical compounds. Both are triphenylmethane dyes with a violet colour and are used in staining and indicator applications. However, they differ in their chemical structure Crystal Violet contains methyl groups, whereas Ethyl Violet contains ethyl groups and therefore have different specific properties and uses.

Ethyl Violet soda lime is a mixture of soda lime (a carbon dioxide absorbent composed mainly of calcium hydroxide with small amounts of sodium or potassium hydroxide) impregnated with Ethyl Violet indicator. It is used in gas absorption systems where the Ethyl Violet changes colour (typically from light to purple) to indicate the exhaustion of the soda lime and loss of its COâ‚‚ absorbing capacity.
