Potassium oxalate monohydrate is used as a laboratory reagent for titrations and metal-ion analysis. It also functions as an in vitro anticoagulant by binding calcium. Other applications include its use as a chelating and reducing agent, textile dyeing assistant, photographic chemical, and surface treatment or rust-removal agent.

Potassium Oxalate Monohydrate is soluble in water where it dissociates to provide potassium and oxalate ions. The oxalate ions can react with certain metal ions to form less-soluble oxalate salts.

Potassium oxalate is also known as dipotassium oxalate or oxalic acid dipotassium salt. Its monohydrate form may be called dipotassium oxalate monohydrate or oxalic acid dipotassium salt monohydrate. The systematic name is ethanedioic acid dipotassium salt monohydrate.
