Para-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMAB) is primarily used as the active component in Ehrlich’s and Kovac’s reagents for detecting indoles, primary amines, and pyrroles. It is also used for hydrazine determination, microbiological identification of certain bacteria, clinical testing for urobilinogen and porphobilinogen, Schiff base synthesis and as a chemical intermediate in organic synthesis

Para-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde is also known as 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde. It is also known by abbreviations such as DMAB and PDAB and is closely associated with Ehrlich’s reagent, where it serves as the principal active reagent. Its molecular formula is C₉H₁₁NO.

Para-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMAB) is used in Ehrlich’s and Kovac’s reagents for the detection of indole. In an acidic medium, it reacts with the electron-rich indole ring, especially at the C-2 position to give a red or pink-to-red colored product. The appearance of this characteristic color indicates the presence of indole compounds in the sample.
