
Copper Sulphate Anhydrous is an inorganic copper compound with the chemical formula CuSO₄. It is the water-free form of copper sulfate and appears as a white or off-white crystalline solid with a rhombic crystal structure. Unlike the blue pentahydrate form (CuSO₄·5H₂O), anhydrous copper sulphate contains no water of crystallization and readily absorbs moisture from the air. Copper sulphate anhydrous is used in analytical chemistry as a moisture indicator and laboratory reagent, as well as in electroplating, mining, wood preservation and the manufacture of other copper compounds.
When water is added to anhydrous copper sulphate, it absorbs water molecules and forms copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O). Thus its color changes from white to blue.
Anhydrous copper sulphate is stable at moderate temperatures but decomposes thermally at about 600 °C forming black copper(II) oxide while releasing sulphur dioxide and oxygen gases.Â
Anhydrous copper sulphate is prepared by heating copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5Hâ‚‚O) to remove its water of crystallization and produce the white anhydrous form.Â
