Calcium acetate is mainly used as a phosphate binder for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with kidney disease. It is also used in calcium supplements, pharmaceutical formulations, biochemical research, food preservation and wastewater treatment.

Calcium acetate is an ionic compound composed of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) and acetate ions (C₂H₃O₂⁻) which are held together by ionic bonds in a crystalline lattice.

Calcium acetate is the calcium salt of acetic acid while vinegar is a liquid solution that primarily contains acetic acid. They are chemically related but they are different substances with distinct chemical properties and uses.

Calcium acetate is prescribed to help manage elevated phosphate levels in patients with chronic kidney disease.  It should be taken only under medical supervision, excessive intake of calcium may increase the risk of hypercalcemia.

Calcium acetate is moderately to highly soluble in water and thus is used in the pharmaceutical, laboratory and industrial fields.
