Anthrone is primarily used as a reagent for the colorimetric determination of carbohydrates. It is widely used in cellulose, starch, and total sugar assays, as well as in the quantitative analysis of sugars in biological samples and plant extracts.

The Anthrone reaction usually gives a blue-green or green color under normal test conditions. Certain specific analytes may produce color variations based on the composition of the sample and reaction conditions.

Anthrone and anthracene are different compounds. Anthracene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and does not have a carbonyl group, while Anthrone is an oxygen-containing ketone derivative of anthracene

The Anthrone assay consists of the reaction of carbohydrates with anthrone reagent in concentrated sulphuric acid. Carbohydrates were dehydrated to form furfural derivatives which react with anthrone to produce a colored complex that was measured spectrophotometrically.

Anthrone is generally prepared by the reduction of anthraquinone with reducing agents such as tin or copper. It can also be synthesized through the cyclization of o-benzylbenzoic acid under suitable reaction conditions.
